First Honest Interview for 2013 with Marija Filipova/

Before the holidays we were lucky enough to catch up with the lovely Marija Filipova the creator of a very up and coming blog The Black Cape.

We got an insight into Marija’s life as a stylist, her advice on cracking the fashion industry and the truth about the supposed glamorous life.

A very honest interview!

What is your job title?

I’m not working at the moment, went to Sweden (my hometown) from London, to take some holiday,! I work in fashion styling!

What is the best thing about working in fashion?

Best thing would be, all the cool people you meet, and cool places you get to see!

Your advice to anyone hoping to crack the fashion industry would be…

Move to one of the “fashion capitals” makes it so much easier. In fashion its mostly about having great contacts, you could have a great education in fashion, but that doesn’t mean you can make it, you need contacts! Many people intern, which is a great way to get into the industry!

Could you tell us a little bit about how you got into styling and fashion shoots?

I always wanted to work in fashion, so when I moved to London the plan was to get into that industry. I was very lucky, cause when I met my boyfriend one of his closest friends was a fashion stylist and when she heard that, that’s what I wanted to do, she kindly brought me along to shoots and such!

Has the fashion world been close to what you expected or has it turned out to be a lot more different?

A lot more different then I expected I must say, especially the styling job, a lot of people think it’s a very glamorous job, but it’s a lot of hard work behind it, a lot of running around oxford street with suitcases filled with clothes to return and so on, and people are VERY false in the industry. It’s a strong hierarchy going on, where there will always be someone above you and that person is not afraid to show it. It’s a lot of people sucking up to each other, until you’re “anyone” in the buisness, you need to work really hard and usually without any pay.

What’s your favorite thing so far about blogging?

Without sounding too cheesy, my favorite thing would be all the kind responses I get and the comments, they put a smile on my face everyday! Makes it so much more fun to blog!

What advice would you give to existing bloggers/people wanting to start blogging?
It’s important to have a nice and cool layout on your website! Nowadays it feels like it’s a lot more focused on pictures, photos (fashion blogs that is), so more pics is always good!

How has working in fashion changed the way you dress?

It hasn’t really changed my style, it’s mostly my friends and hangouts that change the way I dress. When I’m in London I dress a bit more hipsterish I guess, and whenever I would go to sweden, I hated my hipsterish clothes and just wanted to dress very minimalistic, cause that’s how people in Sweden dress. Obviously after working in fashion and blogging about it now, has made me definitely more aware of the current trends and designers, which makes me more materialistic, and that’s dangerous for the wallet!

How would you describe your personal style?

A mixture of minimalistic, hipster and rock.

What are your top fashion events?

I’ve had dinner with Natasha Bedingfield at her fashion shoot, that was pretty cool! I got completely star struck when I saw a very pregnant Peaches Geldof standing in front of me at London Fashion Week, I love Peaches, didn’t really know what to do with myself!

What are your top online blogs?

That would be angelica blick, 5 inch and up, camille over the rainbow.

Top menswear designers?

Burberry, a Burberry trench on a hot man, DAMN! Also Liam Gallagher’s brand Pretty Green makes real nice menswear! My boyfriend’s fave!

Top womens designers?

Acne, Balmain, Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang, Givenchy.

When I’m in London, my hottest hang-outs are…

The “hottest” place I’d been in London would be Bungalow 8 but it wasn’t the funniest, otherwise I was a regular at The hawley arms pub in Camden (Amy Winehouse’s fave pub, you should go if your a fan!), The Purle Turtle Club in Camden, also Shakewell Arms and Alibi in Dalston.

And when I’m in my hometown I love hanging out at…

Honestly my hometown , Lund is really small, so not too much fun going on, guess if i’d go out I would go to the club Debasar in Malmö! Otherwise, just chilling out at home is a favorite of mine, getting to be taken care of by Mum is priceless!

(AGREED)

On my iPod right now is… Jumpin Jack Flash by The Rolling Stones, will always be such a tune!

In five years I’d like to…
Working for a fashion magazine as either a creative director or an art director, or maybe run a successfull blog, one can only hope!

Finally whats in store for Marija and her style in 2013
2013 will hopefully come with fun job opportunities, more traveling, fun experiences. My style will be updated with the latest trends combined with my own twist to it!
